Individual Counselling or Therapy is a one-on-one session between the client and the Psychologist in which they focus on ways to work through matters related to mental health, everyday difficulties the client may be experiencing or teaching new skills that are structured specifically to the client's needs.
Therapy is a collaborative process between the Psychologist and the client and a relationship forms the basis for transformation. All Therapy is tailored to the individual's needs and what fits them. I work with all people, from adolescents to adults in short-term or long-term therapy.
Therapy can help people with many difficulties, including the following:
• Trauma (sexual abuse, violence etc)
• Grief and Bereavement
• Stress Management
• Personal Growth
• Interpersonal Relationships
• Chronic Illness
• Workplace Wellness
• Career Counseling
• Study Skills
• Life transitions (eg. pregnancy + divorce)
• Self Esteem Issues
Seeing a Therapist can be greatly beneficial for teens experiencing challenges. Teenage years can be a difficult phase for most adolescents and their families. The pressures on young people are ever increasing and being exposed to so many things through technology adds to these struggles.
Many teenagers find it difficult to talk to their parents, or their parents are simply not involved, or they are not able to talk to their friends. Adolescence is a unique development phase and in Therapy, it is important for a Psychologist to enter the teenager's world and to understand their environment and experiences from their perspective while creating a safe environment for them to talk in.
Common problems teenagers face include the following
• Suicidal Thoughts
• Self-Injurious Behaviours
• Behavioural Problems
• Adjusting to Parental Divorce
• Choosing A Career Path
Marriage Counselling and Couples Counselling is a form of therapy in which a therapist helps two people in a romantic relationship work through difficulties they may be experiencing as a couple. The aim of this counselling is to help the couple develop the tools to make a relationship work. This could include gaining insight into their dynamic, to grow in the understanding of each other's needs, to resolve the conflict they are having or to enhance the relationship.
Not all couples receive counselling for the same reasons. Some couples may need therapy to improve their relationship, others come to save their relationship and some couples even seek therapy to assist them through their divorce.
Each family is unique and has its own challenges, and some find it hard to live in harmony with each other. Unforeseen circumstances, stresses, different views, expectations, rebellious children and parenting problems all play a big role in the family’s well-being. Family Counselling provides the family opportunity to communicate and to help resolve problems in a respectful way
Having long-term or Chronic Illness can disrupt your life in many ways. Your illness may affect your appearance or your physical abilities and independence. You may need to adjust your working hours which can lead to financial problems. For children, an illness can be frightening because they may not understand what is happening to them. Working through the various feelings and managing your thoughts will probably allow you to adjust to your current situation with greater ease.
Your career path is a lifelong process and there are a number of factors that could influence your journey, including your interests, abilities, values, personality and background. Career counselling is the process that will help you understand yourself and the world in order to make your career a success.
A Career is more than deciding what to major in (at college or university) what employment you want to get when you graduate. It occurs throughout your life as you change and grow as an individual. The goal of career counselling is to not only help you make the decisions you need to make but to give you the knowledge and skills you need to make better-informed career and life decisions.
Students show up in class thinking that the teacher is there to lay out the perfect plan for them, and theirs is simply to glide through it. Unfortunately, studying does not work the same for each individual and teaching study skills to a student is a great way to teach them to take ownership of their learning. We provide students with study tips and strategies and we teach them how to set goals. These tips go far beyond studying and can teach students to learn independence that will make them ready for career choices and life goals in the future.
